The Process of Mohs Surgery

Published on March 17, 2020

For addressing skin cancer and removing the tumor the commonly used effective procedure is Mohs surgery. Both squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma can be removed with this process. As a micrographic surgery this one is done by slowly removing and examining skin tissues from the area where tumor is visible.

Procedure

Acquiring its name from the surgeon who developed the technique, Frederic E. Mohs, this is one of the most predominantly established surgeries for skin cancer with a very high success rate. After a local anesthesia, the surgeon removes visible tumor tissue along with a little surrounding tissue. This is examined in the laboratory and an additional layer is extracted in case the cancer has spread deeper than visible. Till the removed tissue contains no cancer cells the procedure is repeated. Stitches are given at the site or the incision is left to self-heal.
